Pier 94 Wetlands

This small salt marsh along the northeast shore of Pier 94 was developed after a portion of the fill material that compromises Pier 94 subsided, and became subject to tidal inundation. In 2006 the Port removed the fill material and debris (concrete, asphalt, tires) to create approximately 1.5 acres of new wetland, greatly improving tidal circulation and creating a more natural topography. Although small, these wetlands at Pier 94 provide rare and valuable habitat in this highly industrialized portion the city's shoreline.
